{"id":41523,"date":"2018-02-27T05:48:09","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T10:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox-newtech.tech-access.ca\/?post_type=news-lists&#038;p=41523"},"modified":"2026-04-13T09:13:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T09:13:55","slug":"tech-access-canada-welcomes-strong-support-for-college-applied-research","status":"publish","type":"news-lists","link":"https:\/\/www.tech-access.ca\/?news-lists=tech-access-canada-welcomes-strong-support-for-college-applied-research","title":{"rendered":"Tech-Access Canada Welcomes Strong Support for College Applied Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"xn-location\">OTTAWA<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"xn-chron\">Feb. 27, 2018<\/span>\u00a0\/CNW\/ &#8211;\u00a0Tech-Access Canada, the national network of\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a030 Technology Access Centres (TACs), welcomes Budget 2018 initiatives to support innovation and applied research at\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0colleges and c\u00e9geps.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Budget 2018 announced:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Significant support for collaborative innovation projects through the College and Community Innovation Program.<\/li>\n<li>Investments in the equipment researchers need through the Canada Foundation for Innovation.<\/li>\n<li>Help for Canadian entrepreneurs and small business owners to develop innovative technologies and successfully commercialize them in a global marketplace through the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP).<\/li>\n<li>A mandate for the Regional Development Agencies to support the Innovation and Skills Plan across all regions of\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;This is a call to action for Technology Access Centres and their affiliated c\u00e9geps and colleges to mobilize their facilities and talent to help Canadian SMEs solve innovation challenges to maximize regional economic impact and growth. We&#8217;ll help these firms become more innovative and productive. Just watch us!&#8221; said\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">David Berthiaume<\/span>, Executive Director of OLEOTEK and Chair of Tech-Access Canada&#8217;s Advisory Board.<\/p>\n<p>Technology Access Centres are specialized applied R&amp;D centres affiliated with Canadian colleges or c\u00e9geps. Demand-driven TACs help Canadian businesses \u2013 especially SMEs \u2013 advance their products, processes and services by:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>conducting applied research and development projects focused on company problems;<\/li>\n<li>offering specialized technical services and objective advice; and<\/li>\n<li>providing training related to new types of equipment and processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Dr. Nathalie M\u00e9thot, Manager, Office of Applied Research and Innovation, La Cit\u00e9 and Vice-Chair of Tech-Access Canada&#8217;s Advisory Board, &#8220;Applied research at Technology Access Centres and their affiliated c\u00e9geps and colleges is complementary to the world-class discovery research taking place at Canadian universities. A strong, competent network of college applied research across the country provides even more inter-institutional partnership opportunities between colleges and universities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tech-Access Canada is the national network of\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a030 Technology Access Centres (TACs). The network enables the TACs to serve any company, anywhere in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>, and help them access the expertise, equipment, and facilities they need to solve their innovation challenges. The network&#8217;s members provide clients and partners from across\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>\u00a0with access to:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>expertise and experience of over 1,000 business innovation and applied R&amp;D experts;<\/li>\n<li>over 2.4 million square feet of innovation and applied research space; and<\/li>\n<li>over\u00a0<span class=\"xn-money\">$250 million<\/span>\u00a0worth of highly-specialized equipment and facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;By design, colleges and c\u00e9geps are institutions of inclusion, with very diverse student populations in all corners of the country.
